How Much Is Your Time Worth?
Right Person, Wrong Position?

Is that really a cat trying to get a dog bone? Yes, you see this correctly. Her name is Haven, I rescued her in 2009. She is trying to open the dog's bone! I took this picture, because I was in awe! I couldn't believe my eyes...
Cats don't eat dog bones!
I am glad I took this picture. At the time, I just thought it was
funny and cute. But as I talk to my clients about having the right person at work, but in the wrong position that doesn't fit them, I thought....
This picture says it all.
How many times have you heard yourself say, "Why can't this employee just do as I ask them?" Or "What else can I do to get them to perform? How about, "What will it take for them to get it right? This is my favorite, "I really like this employee, but he/she just cannot do this job!" Then let me ask you.... "How's that working for ya?"
Have you asked yourself... "Do I have the right person, but in the wrong position?" If you haven't, maybe it's time you do. Often times employers either find themselves with a poor performer or just a lot of turnover by having the person in the wrong position.
There are solutions if you find yourself in this situation.

Case Study for Cost of Having an Employee in the Wrong Role

An overview and breakdown of the situation and the cost. Don't let this be you!
Two years ago, one of my clients interviewed and hired a new employee for a sales position. Within the first 6 weeks my client was already noticing performance issues. However, that's what he thought it was. So my client worked with his employee to guide him into being a great salesman. He gave him several chances, lowered his monthly sales quota, changed his schedule for him, sent him to training, purchased more leads, sent out more mailings, sent him to networking events, and even started to micro-manage him. Still month after month, the employee could never hit his quota of sales. Although my client gave this employee every opportunity to succeed, what my client didn't give his employee was motivation! Simply because he couldn't! My client couldn't motivate his employee. Because unfortunately, motivation is something that comes from within one's desires to do something. And this employee was not motivated to be in a sales role. The employee had a different skill set and was clearly in the wrong position to match his talent. Many times, employers hire an employee based on what they want to hear from the employee rather than what the employee is really saying. And for employees, they say what they think you want to hear because they are in need of a job. But with one comes the other and the results are expensive! Not to mention, both the employee and the employer are both miserable.
So how much money did my client actually lose for having this employee in the wrong position? Together we calculated $190,000. Below is a brief breakdown:
- Hiring cost = posting the position in a couple of advertisements and a booth = $1,500.00
- Marketing, leads, mailings, = $12,000
- Outside training = $2,000
- Certification for insurance selling = $700
- Salary = $48,000
- Benefits = $5,000
- Loss of Production = $120,000 Total Cost: $190,000
- Most importantly, my client's time, which he cannot get back!
Now This Makes More Sense!
